How the hell was he more popular than Letterman?

Letterman was a great show, and he was funny and great at interviewing guests.

Leno talks like he's on the spectrum. He's goofy looking. He comes across as below average intelligence.

I was never a big Letterman fan. I liked Leno much more. That said… Conan was my favorite by far.

His heyday was during the OJ trial.

Leno’s monologue and weekly headlines segment (where viewers could submit newspaper gaffs, or humorous wordplay) were both superior to the Top Ten-list or anything Letterman ever did. Leno had the audience in stitches with these, and they were frequently conversed about by folks the next day at the office.

Also, unlike Letterman, Leno remained scandal-free. His charisma and camaraderie with band leader, Kevin Eubanks, was quite palpable.

Leno was in LA, which gave him access to a far superior stable of stars.

I never liked younger "Doritos era" Leno. With that skunk hairdo. But I was a big fan of old fat white haired Leno.

Leno routinely got great guests, and he was reliably, consistenty good. Came across as a good person, down to earth and never in any scandals. He also avoided mean-spitited or biased politics. He was comfort food....in the same spirit as Johnny.

Letterman was, in his heyday, fantastic. He revolutionized the genre, and there will never be another show quite like his. Unfortunately, he started to get more and more political in the last 5-10 years of his run...and very one-sided/biased. His hatred of all things Republican became palpable. He never used to be like that....and it's a shame. It made him kind of a dick, similar to how Colbert is a dick.
Still...I have fond memories of Dave, because I was a young viewer who caught all of his best years.

Ultimately, I was a big fan of both Dave and Jay, and miss good late night TV.

Leno worked harder.

Letterman was lazy and it showed.

Some people respect hard work - I did.
