Well, according to the interview with Jason's ex, Carmen Llewelyn, he was already a Scientologist in 1995 when they married and he wanted her to join the church too. So, it does not appear to be Cruise who recruited Lee, since their movie together came out in 2001. I am not sure I believe everything in the interview, since it originated from the "National Enquirer" though. Jason Lee is apparently good friends with Giovanni Ribisi (actor, mostly in movies, and very talented) who was raised as a Scientologist along with his twin sister.
Wikipedia has a fairly long list of celebrities who are in the church, and also former members of it. Apparently Charles Manson (of famous murder fame) was a member for some time, and now says that the church is crazy. What can you say ? I was surprised to learn how long it has been an organized church. Founder L.Ron Hubbard started it around 1953. At some point he also made an concerted effort with his followers to recruit celebrities since they have more connections with large audiences and could therefore have easier access to communicate their beliefs.
Jason Lee's son with Beth Reisgraf is also little Scientologist, since Beth is in the church. I have not read any specifics about his current wife and the church. But when I was looking up as much as I could find after the "Inside Edition" piece about the Enquirer article, it seemed that many of Lee's personal friends and fellow actors are also members. Draw what conclusions you may about his wife from that.
I too felt a disappointment about Lee being a member. But it is his life, and I think it does not diminish his talents and likability on screen. I loved "Earl" too, and love "Memphis Beat". I think the guy is very talented. None of us really know what went on with Lee and Llewelyn, despite the article. I will always question anything from the "National Enquirer". They are only rarely right about some big "bombshell" article anyway(IMO).
