Before Brokeback Mountain and the Joker, Heath Ledger was a young actor trying to be taken seriously. It didn’t help that his star-making role was in a teen rom-com even if 10 Things I Hate About You was better than most movies of its kind. After turning down all the parts that Freddie Prinze Jr.* would eventually play, Ledger’s first step towards legitimacy was supposed to be playing Mel Gibson’s son in the Revolutionary War drama, The Patriot.share
