He wasn't. During an LA Times interview, he was talking about his role in Hung and the fact that, as a young man, he experimented sexually. A few months later, he said his comments about sexually experimenting, combined with his other comments about him being a poor artist were misconstrued into him talking about prostituting himself.
He did say that he "wasn't averse" to letting another man buy him a sandwich – which is as much prostitution as it is for a woman to allow a man pay for her meal. And even if a person goes home and sleeps with their date, that does not make a person a prostitute.
Fans have added to the story, swearing that he said he also stated that he mainly slept with older men but it's all hearsay. And people have argued it must be true, that he's just embarrassed by it, asking "Why didn't he publicly denounce the article sooner?" ... Probably because, as Johnny Galecki once said about his rumoured homosexuality, "Why defend yourself against something that is not offensive"?
