shareHis last name probably doesn't hurt him, but he's also a great actor. In fact, when he auditioned for "That Thing You Do" he didn't even give the casting director his last name b/c he didn't want to be given the part solely on the fact that he's a Hanks. I happen to love him as an actor. I think he's fabulous.
shareA famous last name can only get you so far. Sure you can always get work, but it's very hard to carve out your own image with people always comparing you to your more-famous family member. Look at the music industry. Julian Lennon was an immediate hit back in '84 because he looked and sounded like his late father. However, it was next to impossible for him to create his own image because his father was always mentioned in anything he does. I think Colin has been quite successful on his own. I didn't even know it was 'Tom's son' when I saw him in King Kong. I don't think he'll go the way of Jason Connery or Mike Norris, rather he looks to be headed in the direction of Charlie Sheen.

What a load of crap. Like the casting agents didn't have any clue this guy might be the boss's son. Old Hollywood veteran Howard Feuer did the casting, I'm sure he was familiar with Tom Hanks and his family members. If Colin Hanks wanted to do something on his own, why not just audition for projects his father had no part of? There were plenty of those circa 1996, but instead he auditioned for That Thing You Do!
It's fine if you like him, he's a capable actor, but don't pretend he isn't a product of nepotism. It's insulting.

He can't act. Every role he speaks and acts the same. He didn't get his father's talent, just his last name.
shareThat's something all actors do. Connery did the same thing for 40 years and is a great actor. Tom Hanks does the same, also great actor. Your remark makes no sense.
shareHes appeared in 25 films in about 13 years. And by "appeared" I mean, appeared. As in not a lead character etc.
If he was using his father's name or influence he would be in a lot more I think.
Where he is is pretty accurate as to how good/diverse he has been in his roles. Kinda average.
Now if he was in 50 movies and was leading in some big name movies Id be questioning it. But I think this one is actually down to work on his part.
I mean seriously, do most movie goers even know hes the son of tom hanks?
< O >
I have no prob. with him as an actor... but if you believe that he really just happened to get picked annonymously for a role in his dad's project...
That's like believing that Tori Spelling auditioned for Beverly Hills 90210 and was picked without any casting people recognizing her as Aaron Spelling's pride & joy.
