Does anyone remember Phil Donahue?

Phil Donahue had a talk show in the middle of the day, around the time school let out that had all manner of guests on it. He started the reality TV talk show. He had a guest, or guests on the show, and he would interview them for a bit, and then throw the floor open for questions while he dashed around the auditorium with his microphone on a 100 foot cable and let people talk and ask questions. It was brilliant. It was democracy - small "d". Sometimes he had on people you would love, sometimes people you would hate, sometimes people you would hate, but after you saw them being part of the system and having their say you would like them better or at least understand them.

The Phil Donahue Show was broadcast nationwide between 1970 and 1996. Donahue also briefly hosted a talk show on MSNBC from July 2002 to March 2003.

Around the time of 9-11 and the Iraq war Phil had a reboot of his show going, but he was forced to follow certain rules. For example, he could never have more Liberals on his show than Conservatives. If he had more than one person on his show - he, himself, was counted as two liberals. Finally, when he was not strenuous enough in support of the Iraq war Phil was fired and his show taken off the air.

From Wikipedia:

Soon after the show's cancellation, an internal MSNBC memo was leaked to the press stating that Donahue should be fired because he opposed the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq and that he would be a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war" [21] and that his program could be “a home for the liberal anti-war agenda”.[22] Donahue commented in 2007 that the management of MSNBC, owned at the time by General Electric, a major defense contractor, required that "we have two conservative (guests) for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals."[23]

Phil was very quiet about this at the time, but if you find and listen to his interviews about that time he will explain it clearly. Phil was the best at what he did, and a staunch supporter of democracy, and an amazing patriot and believer in our system - our system that has let him down. That is how America controls the media and rigs elections.

I agree with every word you wrote. Phil was an oasis of thoughtful discussion in the desert of daytime TV back then, and his rebooted show was always smart. It's quite telling that it was yanked during the Iraq War, even though it was the channel's highest-rated show. The channel didn't like Phil asking hard questions & pointing out uncomfortable facts, so they chose to kill the messenger.

Yeah, I updated my original comment with a few facts.

The reason I was thinking think about is that last night on YouTube I stumbled across a show that he did with the extremist Black Muslim Dr. Khallid Muhammad. Wow, that show was very hard to watch, but it might have been the beginnings of Black Lives Matter. The reaction of the Black Muslims to 500 years of American oppression was beyond angry, and this guy was so full of hate - and not only him, but his followers in the audience. He talked about how and why he supported a black man Colin Ferguson for shooting white people.

I think only Phil Donahue had the guts to try to present this point of view to the American public.

He and Bill Moyers were among the very few on American television who would give marginal voices a chance to be heard. And they always treated them with courtesy & respect as fellow human beings. Wish we could see a little more of that in all media today!

reply

I loved Bill Moyers, but I thought his show was elitist and useless. It also was not a real stimulant to democracy.

Please read and maybe comment on my mention of the BBC show Question Time below. Have you ever seen it? That is what democracy should look like.

reply

His show was actually pretty good. He was smart and sensible, and he'd alternate discussions of very difficult subjects with celebrity guests - I remember the time Ringo Starr came on and was the most charming human being ever!

It's a damn shame to read that, the corruption of the media has me VERY worried about the future.

reply

No disrespect, but the time for us to worry about the future is long in the past. Look at what is happening. Already it was over when Phil's show was taken off the air due to military contractors owned the broadcast networks. Go search around even MovieChat for the old discussions on IMDB and see how many good mature discussions there used to be on here, as opposed to the Right-Wing rants and hate-speech.

The only think that represents even a shadow of that today with such erudition and patriotism is the Thom Hartmann show on the radio. I am just now reading Thom Hartmann's "The Hidden History of American Oligarchy: Reclaiming Our Democracy from the Ruling Class" ... but sadly that book should be renamed to "Remembering Our Democratic Aspirations From The Past Aborted By The Ruling Class"

reply

Interesting. I was a big fan of Phil's. His show was way better than Sally Jessie and Oprah and whatever else was on.

reply

Way, way!!

Phil was one of the last evenly balanced topical talk show hosts AND he didn't hide the fact that he held Left of Center viewpoints, BUT he was always impartial in letting the other side speak their mind. I also remember idiots like Morton Downey Jr trying to mock Donahue's format by being a rude and abrasive shithead to his guests by interrupting them and cutting to commercial when they were making their statements.

reply

Totally agree with that. America will never see the likes of Phil Donahue or the Phil Donahue show again.

The closest thing I've ever seen is the British political show Question Time that is so cool. They set the show up every week in a different major city in the UK, and they have local, national politicians, leaders, journalists and even celebrities on the panel, and a local public audience. The show consists of different topics where the audience gets to question anyone on the panel, and comment on their answers. It is brilliant and I wish the US would have a program like this to help give the vision to what democracy really looks like.

This is hard to watch, but it is representative of the kind of different perspectives that Phil brought to the American people daily for years. Whatever you think of this, it gets you thinking - and there is very little of that on TV today.

I remember how George Will handed Phil his ass and Phil shaking his head trying to keep up with him - and I don't even like George Will.
