Let’s see:share
1. She stopped making money - The usual Hollywood villain. It’s been nearly a decade since a film that Hathaway herself helmed made a significant profit. She’s done well in ensemble casts and in voiceover roles; however the “Starring Anne Hathaway” jobs weren’t earning their keep.
2. She started a family - Hollywood doesn’t wait on many and her decision to start a family came with a cost: Her career. She may be able to come back; however she’s not young and with not a lot of hits in the recent past, she’s got some high hurdles to surmount.
3. She doesn’t have a franchise - She REALLY needed a franchise to tide her over until other roles came along. She doesn’t have one and now she’s looking for well-paying work.
4. The pandemic - While Hathaway worked during the pandemic, she did not remain in the spotlight and that comes with a cost.
5. She’s…pretty average - Seriously. No one says “Hey let’s go see that Anne Hathaway film” even if there was such a thing, of which there haven’t been many in the last decade. She didn’t appear in movies, so movies didn’t cast her, so she hasn’t appeared. It’s a circular problem.
OPINION: At 41, with no franchise, facing stiff competition, and never being a “sexpot”, Hathaway has to hope for one or more substantial critical roles, or she has to luck into a commercial hit. If she doesn’t get either of those, then it’s going to be streaming television and arthouse films for her until it’s time for “grandma” roles.
