Easy Lover Video

In the promotional video for the hit song "Easy Lover" (performed with Phil Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire) Phil is clearly wearing his mid 1980s golfing attire - Slazenger v-neck knitted tank top, polo shirt, grey pleated slacks, etc.

I have no doubt in my mind that he was literally heading off to the golf course just as soon as he was through with the seeming "chore" of making this video. He couldn't even be bothered with the hassle of changing once he arrived at the club house!

Can anyone shed further light on to this hugely unusual case? What was Phil's handicap at the time? Or was there something more sinister behind his odd dressing choice that day?

reply

I think it's just another cheap music video they could churn out in one day..the director/producer simply came up with the idea of Phil and Phil meeting, getting along, rehearsing the song, go out to lunch and then, dress up in casual suits and go out and sing on a sound-stage in front of TV cameras.
This is how it was back then, cheap and easy music videos could promote the song and sell CD's.

The guy was EVERYWHERE in the 1980's.

I try to explain to Millinials how ubiquitous he was for the time.

If he wasn't creating hits with Genesis one year, he had his own successful solo projects the next, add to that movie sound tracks, and his 'I can feel it' beer commercial...the man was on Hard Rock stations , Soft Rock stations, teen music radio, MTV seemingly every hour.

The one thing I never heard in the 1980's was...we need more Phil Collins.

So basically he was the Pitbull of the '80s?

reply

He was bigger...much bigger, adults loved him, his songs fit in with just about every demographic across multiple fields (hard rock, romance, teen pop, serious) Collins tunes were so non-threatening and commercially viable that
escape was impossible.

Today you can now mostly tune out a pop Star if you wish (I haven't heard a Taylor Swift song in years) there are just too many avenues of entertainment.

In the 80's it was not the case. Radio and MTV we're the only ways to hear music aside from your personal collection.

I know, I was just making a joke. I grew up in the '80s. I chose Pitbull because he's the only plain-looking, old bald guy who looks more like your tax guy than a pop star, and he guests on everyone's song these days.

Don't know if anyone will have already seen this but love this Pitbull related sketch:-

True. Easy Lover one year, Invisible Touch with Genesis the next.

Although this doesn't help shed light on his golf ensemble and whether he was indeed chasing a low handicap back in the 80s.

Further investigation is not helped by the fact that it turns out that there is a pro golfer also named Phil Collins thus rendering Google searching less than helpful.

There's a few of his songs I like. One thing I really liked about Collins though is that he looked so unlike your typical Rockstar. He looked more like what you'd expect Genesis's accountant to look like. This at a time when a lot of people were complaining that music videos were making the appearance of musicians too important.
