Rip was a real workhorse. I was surprised recently to see him in a small role in Airplane II: The Sequel. Freddy Got Fingered was unjustly misunderstood in '01 but Rip was really funny in it. His best work, however, remains The Larry Sanders Show. He, Jeffrey Tambor, and Garry Shandling did some of the best work of their careers. RIP, Rip
shareFirst time I heard the name I had to laugh. But I rarely noticed what his career was doing. He could have been a comedian (with that name) for all I knew. Finally I remember seeing him in a very serious movie, Cross Creek.
But he had a look about him, not exactly handsome, that he seemed to disappear into his roles. I see a bunch of credits to him, and I think I know the movie, but didn't realize that was he in it.
And I think that's a great trait for an actor. Guys from Matt Damon to Denzel to so many others, are hired for their looks and popularity. I think Mr Torn was hired for his raw ability and versatility and often his comic timing. He might have made a good Leslie Nielsen type, but he didn't want to get pegged into a role.
