One time when being interviewed, Stewart said he and Ian McKellan were the only British actors not to be asked to take part in the series. While he was joking, I'm sure the actual reason is the producers didn't want either of them overshadowing the rest of the cast. Maybe Sean Connery as well.

Stewart was already plugged into the Star Trek and X-Men money train, he would have hit the trifecta if he got a plum role.

Paychecks would have come from WB (Harry Potter),Paramount (Star Trek) and 20th Century Fox/Disney (X-Men)

No non-compete clause in his contract!
