Question about Maggie's character in THE PUMKIN EATER

...Does anyone else get the impression that when she says "Perhaps I'm not normal" when referring to the fact that she gets along better with wives than husbands, that it was hinting at her being lesbian?

If so, would this be Maggie's only lesbian character so far?

Bumping up, just in case someone here who has watched THE PUMPKIN EATER will be kind enough to respond.

Yes, or bisexual, I'd say. Interesting that Harold Pinter felt it significant enough to keep the line in his screenplay from Penelope Mortimer's book.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is interesting that such a line was seen as significant enough to have it in the script. I suppose it would count as a lesbian or bi role for Maggie then.

Very different sort of role for her, very unexpected type of character for her, and that whole film had a different vibe than I'm used to from a Maggie movie. It's like an oddity in her filmography, because up til now, all her films have had a similar feel to them, depending on the decade. But, not that one. It was much darker in tone than most Maggie movies. Still glad I saw it though.

I think the movie was an oddity for the entire cast. It was utterly profound, and so ahead of it's time.

Even though it's not among my favorites, I'm glad I recorded it off of Turner Classic Movies. I'm on a mission to collect all of Maggie's movies, and now I have that when in my collection, thankfully :-)
