Did anyone else watch the "Ford Bronco chase" live as it happened?

I did...I will never forget it. I was at my parents' house for the weekend (It was a Friday evening/night) and I was looking forward to watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks that night on NBC (I was a huge fan of the NBA back then).

I can't remember specifically when the chase started, but I'm thinking it was around 5 or 6 P.M. EST (I'm sure it was before the start of the game). It was surreal watching it... when the game was first starting, NBC kept a tiny little window open on the screen that showed the white Bronco. However, as the game went along, NBC moved the game to the small window and put the chase on the big screen. I remember laying on my parents' couch in the living room, struggling to keep my eyes open, but couldn't go to bed, because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It's one of those events I will probably remember the rest of my life.

I did and I remember being upset because it pre-empted the NBA finals game I was watching.

Then I embraced it and was like "well at least I'll have a good story to tell." And here I am, decades later, telling it.

Yes due to me watching the NBA Finals, I was like "WTF" when I saw the police chase because at that time I've never heard of OJ Simpson.

reply

Yes we were living in California at the time, close to LA, but he was not headed in our direction initially.

I said "If he heads East I am for sure going to go watch and cheer him on (as many did!) from one of the I-10 bridges!". At the time, we didn't know the full extent of the murder, other than he was the prime suspect, and fled to Chicago immediately after, to get out of town, and toss the evidence.

Today there would be enough cameras around to figure out where he dumped the stuff. Back in 1994, not so much.

I caught a few minutes. You realize Reality TV is an addiction. I went out and watched some paint dry instead.

reply

I did. Was a kid when it all went down. I was always wondering why the cops were chasing him so orderly like that. It's almost as if it was a high speed escort instead of a real chase to me.

reply

Yep. I was in middle school at the time. We watched it in shock as our only experience with OJ was from the Naked Gun Movies.

reply

Yes, I lived in LA and my family was watching it when I got home from work. Traffic was a mess.

reply

Yes. Yes I watched it and at the time, all I could think was here's a guy who potentially murdered 2 people in cold blood and is driving 40 MPH on the L.A Freeway with the entire Police Force behind him and it made for great late night TV at the time.. Leno was on fire with this
