shareThat's five films...
shareI for one would certainly not call Ruth Ellis 'evil', Bettina from Ab Fab may not be sweetness and light but she isn't evil either and since when was 'shrill' a synonym for evil?
But to counter your 'evil b-tches'
how about
Gideon's Daughter - Stella Hawthorne
Made in Dagenham - Barbara Castle
The Enchanted April - Rose Arbuthnot
Damage - Ingrid Fleming
Blackadder - Queenie
"Once the vodka gets flowing you never know what's going to happen, really" - Miranda Richardson
She is one of the most versatile actress's about. Especially as she branched into comedy so early in her career.
Its that man again!!
She's all about range. Her performance in "Dance With a Stranger" is one of the greatest I've ever seen.To call her character in that film a conniving bitch is a big fail. Compare the woman she played in that film to the woman she played in "Enchanted April" and than throw in Viv,from "Tom and Viv"...her breath taking work in "Damage" the same year as "The Crying Game".These are different woman, and she plays them brilliantly.

I also have a huge problem with the description of Ruth Ellis. This was a real person going through huge personal trauma and to label her a 'conniving b-tch' is ridiculously shallow. I thought it was a sensitive portrayal of a troubled woman and had huge depth. Got to agree with all these other characters people have mentioned too. There are very few actresses around with Miranda's range - to watch Damage and then Blackadder in one sitting is to prove the extent of this!
Alice. My name is Alice Ayres.
I agree, Prism10! She can go from aggressively authoritarian, to meekly reserved and passive -- it never seems out of place. She has an interesting serenity to her face (it's a very distinctive look) that can come across as, either, cold and unapproachable or jolly, sweet and compassionate, so maybe that weird dichotomy throws people off and makes them nervous? I think she can play anything perfectly, from goofy comedy to very serious drama. One of my favorite actresses.
