MovieChat Forums > Jerry Lewis Discussion > The MDA charity is broke without him

I remember throughout the 70's & the 80's every year the telethon would raise more money than the previous year. But when the run time of the telethon was reduced & Jerry got pushed out in (I think) the 2010's, the donations drastically fell every year since.

I have to believe there are more factors at play than just his absence. I remember as a kid in the 70s and 80s that the Labor Day telethon was an event. Everyone knew and a lot participated.

The evolution of media and the way we consume content has no doubt contributed. Network broadcast television isn't what it used to be.

Hell, even Shark Week on Discovery is a nothing burger now. We just got done with it and there's no talk, no buzz, nothing. [I only bring up Shark Week due to the timing of this post]

Our two friends had MS so the telethon was a big deal to all of us. I was sad to see it end.
