Makes me sad

That Lange, once a quintessential A list actress of the 80s and 90s, has faded out, much like many of her contemporaries unfortunately. Meryl Streep is a very rare exception because no one is quite as talented as her nor as versitile while also aging gracefully. Lange had a fortunate and unlikely gift of resurrection in AHS that got her some TV praise at least and juicy roles. It's astonishing looking back at her prime day filmography with Frances, Cape Fear, Rob Roy (that rape scene alone is worth the whole film), The Postman Always Rings Twice, Losing Isaiah, Blue Sky, Men Don't Leave, Sweet Dreams, Country, and Music Box (which I just saw again recently and once again Lange blew me away), hell, even the poorly reviewed but brilliantly acted A Thousand Acres! It just makes me a little sad of what was there then and now, and for the last 25 years. All I see for her now that she's done with AHS, for better or worse, is another TV show or a movie (but not the lead), a supporting role in
an obscure little film, or a stage production. And this is not bad at all for 66 year old actress in the female ageist industry. I just really wanted to see her score at least one more Oscar nomination before she retires. Who knows, it might happen, kind of like Sally Field in Lincoln a few years back.

Well at least she's left behind a tremendous body of work for her fans to enjoy. Jessica has other priorities that are equally as important to her as her film and television career, and while I'm also disappointed she's retiring from acting, I'm glad she's devoting time to other interests that bring her joy and fulfillment. Like you said, who knows what may happen in the future. Perhaps after her hiatus Lange will land a great film role that snags her another Oscar nomination, we shall see.

reply

Yes fingers crossed. There are some characters that No One can do as well as her.

I dont think its anything to be sad about. Id imagine Some actors are actually happy to accept less and less work as they grow older. It would become a lot more grueling performing in your 60s. Remembering lines. Long hours on set. Travelling for press conferences and interviews and premieres. Acting is not as glamourous as it sounds.

reply

No I know. It just seems that if not for AHS she would have completely disappeared in the 2000s after such a career she's had. I'm glad she's going out on the high note.

It's been confirmed Lange will be starring in a major Broadway production, so hopefully there will be a Tony nomination in her future!!

reply

Meryl Streep ain't that great.
