R-rated Hobbit? A first for Middle-earth

I wonder if they used market testing to determine if the R-rating would bring a net increase or decrease in sales. I know that Pete shot LOTR in essentially an R-rated fashion and then edited it down to PG-13. Sounds like he did the same with the Hobbit. There will be a few folks who will only be able to watch five of the six extended edition Middle-earth films, but it's Pete's film, so it's his call.

Does this mean we'll eventually get an R rated Star Wars film?

For Peter, it's all about the $$$$$. Just milking the franchise for all it's worth. He'll release a porno version of it next, with CGI porn doubles like in Nymphomaniac.

I hope not. There is a sizeable portion of the long-time Middle-earth fans, (and the same would be true of the Star Wars fans), who will see this move to an R-rating and be perplexed. It is incongruous to have five entries in a series be relatively family-friendly, and one that isn't. The actual content that earned the R-rating may be brief, but the rating itself will limit the audience.

Doesn't matter if it does limit the audience slightly as the films have made huge amounts of money. i'm all for R rated versions of LOTR and the Hobbit.

Hopefully! But it shouldn't be part of the main series. It should be a spin off.

There was a television series in the works called Star Wars Underworld that was targeted at adults. It's apparently still in development and might happen.
