About the Mortal Engines adaption

I've read that Jackson wants to combine two of the books into one. What is he thinking? That would be so wrong. Each of the books is quite long. How can he possibly make it work?
He must have come a long way since his pre-LOTR Days when he convinced the studio let him make one film for each of the books.

He also said that he will change the plot and have all the cities flying instead of moving around on the ground.
There'a a big risk that he will ruin a potential franschise that way. I think our beloved Peter Jackson has lost his "thing".

Most of this is all rumors. Jackson may be gauging what studios are willing to commit to. When the final deal is announced that will be the reality and we won't need to speculate.

Also, Mortal Engines is hardly been fast-tracked. There may be a script floating around somewhere, but I wouldn't bet on seeing a Mortal Engines film in the next three - four years.

Why is it so hard to struck a deal?
Many trash films are being greenlighted. But not Mortal Engines, which has a lot of potential.

I actually think it might be Jackson himself holding up production. Remember that the Hobbit made money, so Jackson is surely getting a bunch of offers from the studios to do a franchise film (Star Wars stand-alone, DCU, Jurassic World, etc.), but he has stated that he doesn't like franchise filmmaking (ironic, I know), and he's likely turned them down during this extended hiatus.

Now one of the ways studios like to bargain is by asking a director like Jackson to do a franchise film and in exchange they'll give him a budget for one of his own projects. If Jackson has turned down these offers, he may have made Mortal Engines, Silmarillion, Dam Busters, Temeraire, etc. even less likely.

I would probably be willing to give that movie a try. I'm not really familiar with the book, but if PJ is directing, it might be a great introduction for me.

Yes, I understand.
But what's keeping the studio from finding another director?
