That's a nice post, well said. Tommy (as he's known to friends) is a good actor, very underappreciated. There's so many talented actors in Hollywood that just don't get much recognition. I'm not surprised he was close to Swayze and looked up to him, as he did two more films with him after Outsiders, Red Dawn & Grandview USA.
What's interesting is that he did a lot of unknown but solid low budget movies in the 90s (some are on youtube). I recommend the film Kid (1990) which is a really good action thriller, and a movie he did with Courtney Cox and his ex Rae Dawn Chong called Curiosity Kills (1990). Another good one is Acting on Impulse (1993) - which featues the great Nancy Allen and Linda Fiorentino. You can probably find them on filmboards if they're not youtube.

You're welcome, dude. That projector sounds awesome. It's good you're raising your boy on good films, he'll appreciate that as he grows up. My parents did the same for me, renting vhs videos on weekends in the 90s which shaped my love of film.
I forgot to mention the film Side Out (1990). It's a fun film where Howell plays a law student who moves to LA to play beach volleyball. I heard that it was a huge hit on HBO in the early 90s even though it wasn't a hit in theatres.
Have you seen the sequel to The Hitcher that came out in the early 00s? It has Jake Busey playing the Rutger Hauer part.
Here's some links I found to the movies

Couldn't find the other movie but found this instead. This is a very sad film but it's well acted by Howell and Annie Potts. Breaking The Rules (1992): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-C3TJEmKos
