He's a really extremely good actor. I agree with you. It is something though, what would you give him an award for? It would most likely have been for Best Supporting Actor right, because that's what he mainly is.

He was incredible as Wes Hightower in Urban Cowboy, but maybe he was too young and unknown then, plus the screen time would be an issue, as he's kind of the villain after the halfway mark.

I thought he we pretty good in The River, but that movie, I don't think it was a very big hit.

His role as Bart Mancuso in The Hunt For Red October, now as usual he gives a good performance but it's not a large role, hardly what I would call supporting actor.

I don't know, maybe he just never had the right combination of screen time plus standout performance to equal an Oscar.

I watched Training Day the other night. Amazing performance.
