He seemed like a fairly nice goofy guy committed to being a good dad. Did she whittle him down & back him into a corner? She seems like she was very controlling.

He relapsed. Being involved, let alone married to, an addict is like having a child for a partner, and who wants that? Instead of comforting her when her father died, he was turned on by the contact and wanted sex. Addicts are very self centered and pursue their own pleasure with no regard for what their partner is going through. He deserved to be dumped.
