sharemy first impulse is to say that brown could not have won a general election.
the electorate may (emphasis on may) be open to leftist economic policy these days - anti-trade, govt regulation, nativism - but i don't think they were anywhere close to such a mindset in 92.
but who knows? bush was unpopular & did not campaign particularly effectively, & there was a general mood of anti-incumbency that year.
