how often did she have larger appearances on the Sopranos?

have a look at season 1 and 3
she has a lot more screen time in those series
and shes not just in her office, they establish the character of Melfi so there's heaps of her.

Yeah, she had a much bigger part in the first 3 seasons. She was nominated in the LEAD Emmy category for those seasons, believe it or not. Afterwards she really really only exists to talk to Tony in her office. It's a shame, and kind of surprising since Employee of the Month (an episode centered around her) was so well received. If you like her character I strongly recommend watching the first 3 seasons.

Seasons 1 to 3 are the ones she apprears the most in. I wished they had more scenes of her in the last 4 seasons. Dr. Melfi is one of my favorite characters.
