I believe that the role in Closer was hard to turn down since the script was really good. Blanchett got to work with Patrick Marber in Notes on a Scandal though

I believe she was also Steven Spielberg's first choice to play the role of Agatha in Minority Report, but it never worked out because Cate was too busy with other things at the time. That was back in 2002 though, hardly recent.
