Note she did one film from 1983 (the year Flashdance came out) to 1988. My take:

I saw a televised interview with Jennifer Beals where she stated she was "shockingly unprepared" for the attention she received after Flashdance. If you look at her bio here at IMDB there is a quote where she notes that these days she can ride the subway and not be bothered. She mentions that she wouldn't want to be Julia Roberts.

I think she wants to be an actress, but does not want to be famous, which is what she would be if she were to become a major star. Flashdance's success gave her a taste of what fame would be like and she did not like it.

She took time out to do her degree in Yale. It looks like that a film career may not been the most important goal in her life.

Its that man again!!

Hi Prism10,

Agreed. Jennifer Beals is a very articulate, intelligent woman who might have had a very messy life and career without the discipline of Yale. She wasn't much of an actress in those early years. The Bride was a very weak offering and negative reviews almost destroyed her as an actress. Thankfully, she has learned her craft and understands the business now.

Hi pkelly123,

I remembered when people first discovered that she was bi-racial at the time Flashdance was released and Jennifer didn't affirm or deny. Her management made a statement that they no idea that she was half-black since it never came up and it didn't matter. Most people in the industry at that time didn't know what her ethnicity was or really care about it. What undid Jennifer was her second project, The Bride. She got horrible reviews, wasn't sure she wanted to be under the scrutiny and decided to complete her education at Yale. It was probably the most intelligent decision she could have made. Instead of being a flash in the pan, she returned to acting later and had an enduring career. By the way, one of her friends at Yale was David Duchovny. She was his original choice to play Dana Scully in the X-Files.

in response to pkelly123 jennifer has always been very accepting of her heritage. thats why she wanted to become an actress to show other bi-racial people that they are still people and just because they are bi-racial that their not different or invisible. which is also why she is not a "big" star because she is very humble, not that she cant handle being famous but she doesnt see a need to be a big star and have all this money, she just loves the roles she plays and being a part of a story

Dana: Ah Jesus, you're disfigured!

Hi Tibette 01,

I was one of the journalists who interviewed Jennifer years ago for The Twilight of the Golds. Not only was she beautiful, she was self-assured and very happy with the choices she made. She is a well-respected working actress who still has a career while many other flash-in-the-pans don't. I personally think if she'd gotten her break after her college career and a few acting classes, she would have been a star but who knows how long it would have lasted?
