Why didn't her career take off after Flashdance?

I don't understand why she didn't become a huge movie star.
Although Flashdance wasn't a hit with the critics, it grossed over $200 million at the box office, and she was great in the film. She's clearly had a successful career, a highlight being probably The L Word which lasted for like 5 seasons, but scrolling through her resume, it looks like until the 2000s, all she had were low budget B-movies. Why?

im not sure I was thinking the same BUT maybe its just a series of bad choices she made, im presuming she was offered a lot of roles after flashdance early on and maybe she chose the wrong movies which were crap and flops and then after that she was not offered any decent roles because her previous choices were not good.

even after the L word finished she has not been in anything else that was big

Apparently the director of Flashdance (Adrian Lyne) was so mean to her during filming that she almost gave up acting altogether after that...

She attended and graduated from Yale.

reply

Oh wow. No one has ever bought themselves into Yale and obtained a degree? Hmmm ...?
Not that she isn't a bright, smart person, but had I advantages, I might have been able to boast a Yale degree.

reply

Why assume she bought her acceptance? As an African American who attended Princeton with many other AAs, I wonder if bigotry has any influence on this assumption?

reply

I don't like to assume that just because someone got a degree from Yale they deserve our admiration. Good for her and everything, but personally it doesn't mean anything to me. Look at W. And rich people go to Ivy League schools as much or more for the status than the education. I have nothing against JB, she's lovely, but going to Yale doesn't swing me in her direction.

reply

It's just strange to jump to that assumption without any hint of proof that she was a legacy like Bush or bought her way in like Aunt Becky. You might as well have speculated that she was an affirmative action acceptance.

reply

Adrian has nothing to do with her acting career! She isn't a good actress... One dimensional.... No range!!!

reply

I'm no expert, but you might just have something there.

bulls*it :D

So you don’t have the balls to write “bullshit.” Pathetic.
