Lula

So I ran across this 25-minute film written and directed by Daniel Kruglikov today on Vimeo that features the one and only Michael Wincott. Does anyone have any further info regarding this film as it's quite intriguing and I'm wondering how it came into existence especially with Mr. Wincott?

I will warn you in advance that this short film does contain nudity and some sexual content. So watch at your own risk.

Interesting.
Found that the movie exists here on imdb too, but with no connections to Wincott or anyone else (yet).

There where a bit to mush background noise to make out all what Wincott said, but always interesting to see him.
Thanks for the heads up! =)

I did discover that Daniel Kruglikov is the same writer/director who is doing Wincott's upcoming "The Farewell".

Yes, there is a listing and a half sentence plot description -- "why does Lula run amok?" but not even a single bit about the cast or director....really strange. I've never seen an IMDb listing like this.

The actress, BTW, is Sarabeth Stroller -- she has no IMDb page here, but is a pretty girl (she looks like a young Tilda Swinton) and she was in another one of Kruglikov's music videos, the one for Elephant.

As you point out, "Lula" is so poorly done -- I honestly wondered if it was filmed on someone's CELL PHONE -- that you can't even hear most of MW's dialogue. He appears to be a bad blind date Lula is out on, right before she goes berserk and kills her lesbian lover (yes, I know -- it made no sense to me either).

I would have at least liked to HEAR Michael Wincott speak. He looks good here, but that's about it. Maybe someone associated with the film will stop this forum, and tell us a little about how and WHY "Lula" came to happen.

(BTW: I appreciate the quote from Laputa, one of my favorite Miyazaki films!)

Don't get too excited! I just viewed this on vimeo, and Michael has one short scene (at about the 7.5 minute mark) as a bad blind date (he is also glimpsed briefly earlier in the film) and it's not HIM who is nude. (Whew!)

This is a rank amateur at work here (Mr. Kruglikov) and no idea how he talked MW into appearing in this -- it looks like a student-type production with a confusing, meandering storyline (such as it is). It was never released, needless to say.

Mr. Kruglikov has filmed two music videos, and another short piece "The Farewell", which is listed here on IMDb and which I have heard "is much better than Lula" but honestly, what I have seen of Mr. Kuglikov's work, I am pretty underwhelmed. He has no other professional credits of any kind. You can see all his other work except "Farewell" on his website, danielkruglikov.com.

Honestly as a long-time fan of MW, I have no idea on earth why he'd appear in an amateur student video. It can't be money since something like this could not possibly have paid anything. It can't be exposure, as it's been around since '07 and even a big fan like myself has never heard of it before (and belladante: my extreme kudos to you for even tracking this down!).

So far I have not been able to find ANYTHING relating to this film, or for that matter, even "The Farewell". Anyone who can find anything, I hope you post here. Maybe someone will be willing to contact Mr. Kruglikov himself.

It's a mystery

reply

Ugh, mystery indeed.
When I was on the selections and jury for our Sarasota Film Festival, I saw a lot of crap, but this utter codswallop is abysmally sad and poorly made. It almost appears to be edited from a longer piece of *beep*

We've all done favors for friends and children of friends, as this case may be, so I won't judge dear Michael for participating. I do however hope that no one ever gives that director money to buy more cheap cameras or fake blood. My brain needs a screaming shower right about now... Hey, maybe she was pissed because she saw the first cut?

Anyway, thanks for sharing and caring about Michael. He should know that we are only looking out for his best as always.

Laura, you are such a hoot!

Codswallop about sums it up. Amateur codswallop at that.

I don't think it is edited down from a longer film, because honestly it shows no signs of editing whatsoever. Or production work. Or sound work. I think the kindest thing I can say is that it is likely a student project for a film class.

In MW's scene at the restaurant, you can't hear him (which is terribly unfortunate, as he seems to have some amusing dialogue about being a snotty yuppie, who is going to Christie's auction house to try and "buy a Warhol" for his big art collection in Malibu") because it was obviously filmed in a real restaurant, without a microphone boom. You can hear the other people in the restaurant and the drone makes it impossible to make out what he is saying.

I don't even have words to express how pathetically amateurish this is. It is also clearly not filmed on professional video equipment, nor edited. The blood in the shower...the necrophiliac lesbian love affair and murder...omigod, it just screams "freshman year in film school".

Now, I can accept all that. (I have a nephew in film school! so I know what of I speak!)

What I cannot accept is an actor of Michael Wincott's stature and extraordinary talent agreeing to appear even for five minutes in such a thing. Or let his name be used, even in the end credits. I am gobsmacked.

Laura, I am guessing that Sarabeth Stroller is very likely Mr. Kruglikov's girlfriend. Just guessin'! Also, end credits thank a couple people with the last name "Schnabel" and we know Julian Schnabel is a great long time friend of MWs and Elizabeth Jagger, a former girlfriend of MWs.

Is that an explanation? Maybe. I hope not. As you say, as a true fan for a long time, I wish only the best for him.

This is not the best. It's not even mediocre or generic. What I can't understand is a man, a serious actor, who refuses to do stage work....refuses to do TV (even cable, PBS, good serious stuff)...but agrees to appear in an amateur bit of schlock like this.

Maybe someday someone will tell us why.

I like his mysteries. It's what keeps me a fan and makes me want to be more of a friend to the interesting man.
