What the Hell Happened to Kathleen Turner?

http://lebeauleblog.com/2011/07/04/what-the-hell-happened-to-kathleen- turner/

She started her career as the 80′s answer to a femme fatale. She became an international sex symbol. She could do action, drama and comedy and even voiced Jessica Rabbit. And then she dropped out of sight. No longer a sex symbol, she is best known to some TV viewers as Chandler Bing’s cross-dressing dad on Friends. What the hell happened?

Indeed Turner was gorgeous in her prime. Don't know much about her, some people tend to let go as they age or just don't age very well. Regardless, she's still a terrific actress, albeit not the sex symbol she once was.

She had a drink problem then lots of other health problems...I know she's done a lot of highly regarded work in the theatre in recent years.

If you'd bother to read her IMDB bio, you'd know she suffered from severe RA and years of steroid-use to treat the symptoms impacted her looks. I'm sure her alcoholism took its toll as well.

Sad to hear about her health. I hope she'll be ok.

My guess is that her alcoholism was a steady slide from the time she was diagnosed with RA. Prior to her taking the stronger biologic drugs..which they really didn't have in the early 90's when she was diagnosed, I'm sure that is when she began to self-medicate. Then taking steroids, with the inevitable weight gain.....only made it worse. I don't think that people should be too hard on her. It is a horrible, painful disease. I know because I have it myself...and I did my share of drinking. Anything to dull the pain. My heart goes out to her, and anyone with RA. It sucks!

what about her personal rep? That could affect one's career.

She got old, that's what happened to her.

Kathleen Turner was considered to be one of the biggest movie stars in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In addition to possessing a sexy voice and being incredibly gorgeous, she was very funny, amassing a run of great films, including Body Heat, Romancing the Stone, Prizzi's Honor, The War of the Roses, and Peggy Sue Got Married (for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress).

However, at the start of the millennium, we began seeing her less and less. In fact, her most high profile role after the 2000’s was as Chandler Bing’s father, Charles, on FRIENDS.

At the time, she blamed her work reduction on the lack of roles offered to females over the age of 40. The reality however, is that she began to experience some severely painful bouts of rheumatoid arthritis.

(In case you are unfamiliar with the condition, rheumatoid arthritis is an incurable autoimmune disease that inflames the joints. It also mostly affects women, is extremely painful, and is sometimes treated with chemotherapy)

As her arthritis progressed, Turner started medical treatment, including chemotherapy. She also coped with her pain by drinking. This led to a stark change in her appearance.

Although she was (and still is) a sexy and in demand actress, she was no longer the beautiful leading lady that she was when she was younger, so she lost prominence in Hollywood (apart from television roles).

In addition to that, she gained some notoriety as a “Diva”, and has been said to be a very demanding actress on set, and difficult to work with.

Today, Turner continues to be an in demand actress, starring in smaller roles on the TV screen (on shows like Rick and Morty, The Kominsky Method, and an upcoming role on Mom). Maybe one day, she will return in a prominent role, but for now, we can only enjoy her in supporting roles.

Well said. I have RA as well....it is horrible pain to live with every day. I was just recently diagnosed after a few years of terrible pain. People can be so rude. I am glad she is in remission.

Is it not rude to propagate bad genes?
