She became one of the top actresses of the 90s, working Richard Donner, Wolfgang Petersen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Ron Howard.
sharePossibly just got burned out or wasn't happy with the roles she was being offered. Her last few films before the break were not great. I'd say the last film she did before disappearing that I really enjoyed was The Thomas Crown Affair in '99, which is an underrated movie.
Since coming back, Nightcrawler is the only one that really stands out to me.
During the 1990s, I called her career "Leading Lady to the Stars". Almost all of her roles was that of age-appropriate girlfriend to older male stars like Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman, she was always "the girl" and never an interesting character.
The one exception to that was the marvelous "The Thomas Crown Affair", but where she finally got a chance to be the star and play an interesting person, and I don't know what happened after that. Maybe it was her age (over fifty), maybe it was the lack of scripts available to women her age, maybe she'd made her pile and was fed up with Hollywood. I hope she's been happy.
