Are Tim Roth's mannerisms on Lie To Me his or just him acting?

I am a new fan of Tim Roth's through the Lie To Me TV show and was wondering about his mannerisms on the show, like the way he moves around and looks at other people in the show plus the way he talks(not his British accent). They are a bit disturbing to me and hard to watch, just like when I watch David Caruso in any of the shows that he is in. His acting also kind of reminds me of Peter Falk in the Columbo series. So, are Tim's mannerisms on LTM the way his is normally or is it part of his role?

The way he looks at other people is very creepy. If someone looked me in the face like that, the only thing that they could read from my expressions and body language would probably be fear, annoyance and the desire to escape. People, especially us Americans, find such close proximity interaction a violation of our personal space and all we want to do is pull away to a comfortable distance.
