I'm not justifying his actions. I'm saying even though he was twisted, the writers used the moment to bring out truth about both characters -- the pedophile admitted he was hopeless, and the mother, even though she never said so, also realized she wasn't as wonderful as she thought she was.
Of course the Italian had to go, and of course the mother should have given away the kids -- but her heart was in a place Sean and Julia's WASN'T.
Personally I think it was a weakly written arc anyway. But Nip/Tuck had quite a history of those. They find a replacement for Christian? The replacement turns out to be a crazy couch molester. Christian had cancer? Oops, turns out it was just a mistake. Mother was going to win custody of the children? Oops, turns out she married a pedophile. But then they took her punishment a step further (losing the kids was the initial punishment) and had her framed. Why??
Felt very unfair. Sean and Julia were just bad -- relative to them, Redgrave was practically Mother of the Year.
Anyway. Got off topic. Yes, acting on pedophilic thoughts is unconscionable. But losing the custody of the kids should have been punishment enough. Getting framed was just pointless over kill.
