A couple of his film I really liked have slipped down the ratings - I wonder if they'll be rediscovered or further forgotten. I suspect there is a window when otherwise good films just look dated and after this passes they show in a better light. At the moment I think this window hovers over films of the 90s - 00s and some of the older films may be due for greater appreciation. We shall see.

Interesting theory.

I have found that the "avg" film will fall in popularity ranking about 15-30 slots due to the influx of art house/ international/straight to video movies.

Also I found (no suprise really) that there is a strong bias for viewing the actor in their young man years (20-40), much more pronounced in the popular rankings.

Interesting in this list is Redford only did 4 movies in the 1980's.

I call this theory The Window Of Naffness. It trails along behind each of us, starts approximately 10 years ago is around 20 years long - and is very highly subjective. Anything that once seemed particularly stylish, cloths, actors, film making tropes, etc, can drop in to this window and for a period of time seem unwatchable. Eventually tastes change and some things are remembered and revived - others of lesser quality, or perhaps unlucky, are virtually forgotten.

I like it!

I think also that cable and other media that show movies already know which ones will bring ratings. It can be self re-enforcing not to show more obscure movies. Like Legal Eagles (86)..not a real great movie, but not horrible either, it's drop off is baffeling. So the more obscure the movie becomes to the new generations..the less likely cable/Netflix/media will feature or carry it.
