What is his best film?

I think Rosemary's Baby is his best film. What about you?

reply

Ninth Gate all the way.

reply

Chinatown. Quite possibly the greatest neo-noir film ever made.

Rosemary's Baby's a close second; it would make my list of 25 greatest horror films.

reply

Yup!👍

Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorite films of all time so for me it's an easy choice. But in fairness I haven't seen a lot of his later work.

reply

Lolita😉

reply

Wasn't that by Stanley Kubrick?

Tough to answer this! Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown are both so good that I'd have to choose one of them as his best; I suppose Chinatown is my answer. The Tenant and Repulsion are also excellent, and I wouldn't fault anyone who chose either as his best. My guilty pleasure from his body of work is The Fearless Vampire Hunters, which of course isn't his best, but is my favorite of his non-bests.

Rosemary's Baby, followed closely by Chinatown.

Other of his films may be more artistic or technically proficient, but for sheer enjoyment, you CANNOT beat "The Fearless Vampire Killers".

reply

Chinatown

reply

I think "Chinatown", but I do like "Frantic" & "The Ninth Gate" quite a bit.

reply

The Ninth Gate is good as well.

Seemed to me a lot of people disliked "The Ninth Gate", but I found it tense and a little bit frightening. Sure, there's a layer of goofiness/absurdity to the whole thing (one that I think Alfred Hitchcock would appreciate), but I like that layer there.
