When Dylan's dad dies on 90210

I'm watching Season 3 of BH 90210. I watched this show in the early/mid 90s when it was first on t.v. (and I was a teen/early twenty-something), but re-watching now on dvd. Those episodes where Dylan's dad dies are making me bawl like a baby. It's so heart-wrenching. I never thought Luke Perry had any really compelling scenes until these episodes.

I miss when this show was new...

Especially at the end of the funeral episode when that song "Can't Cry Hard Enough" was played....

I always felt his character didn't have enough good scenes to show his overall humanity. We saw glimpses now and then, like when Toni was gunned down. Still, I think they did a better job making Dillon look human than they did with Brandon. I always felt he had a huge mask on. I loved this show so much as a kid. I am watching reruns on soap network, really takes me back.

I liked the 4th season Christmas episode and arc with Noely Thornton. Luke's range as an actor actually comes across here. Dylan's not just a brooder/angry person. Wish that they had done this more in series. The whole loosing your dad and drugging out for years did not work--especially because his dad was not dead and he did get his money back @ some point.

Except, Dylan's dad didn't REALLY die. It was revealed seven years later (in 90210's last season) that Dylan's dad Jack McKay conspired with the Feds to fake his own death so that the people who he helped nail wouldn't come after him!

...the best episode and my favorite is One Wedding and a Funeral, season 6 episode 10. Just watched this episode again. Still holds up very well.

- Luke Perry has always proved he wasn't just a pretty face. They gave him a character who battled the death of his father, and alcoholism.

- Watching that mob boss father killed his own daughter, Dylan's wife, it was so gut wrenching.

- When the song "Nobody knows me" starts to play again as Dylan caresses his Wife's dress, it just leaves you in tears.

- and when Dylan finally break down and cry at his place after he holds his cat was so moving and heart breaking.

...that is the most heart breaking episode of any tv series I've seen. Beverly Hills 90210 was such a hit show and still holds up well.

I admit I never watched this show when it came on during my high school and college years but now that I'm 43 I've been watching old reruns on the Pop channel and I am actually enjoying it. I find I care about Brenda and wish they would show more Dylan. Can you tell me why they moved from wherever they moved from? I missed the first ep so am not familiar with the original story line. Where did they move from and why and also what grade are they supposed to be in? I did hear the mom say they were 16. They are twins right- Brenda and Brandon? How old is Dylan supposed to be too?
Thanks!

No one has responded to your questions yet so I'll give it a shot:

They moved from Minnesota to Beverly Hills for their father's job. He is an accountant/money manager and was offered a better opportunity in LA.

Yes, Brandon and Brenda are twins and they are 16 yrs old when the series begins, so that would them Sophomores in high school. Dylan and the rest of the group are the same age except for David and Scott who are a year and grade behind everyone else.

Hope this answers your questions.
