Angela Lansbury played Laurence Harvey's mother in THe Manchurian Candidate and she is only 3 years older than him.
Lawrence Fishburne played Cuba Gooding Jr. father in Boys in the Hood. I think he's only seven years older. Sally Field is also only ten years older than Tom Hanks, her son in Forrest Gump. But in both cases, they played the parents of the young children first and were kept on as the parents when they were aged later.

Hollywood likes to create a fantasy world in which the normal rules can be bent and broken. It happens in dramatic ways where a skinny teenage girl kung fu kicks the crap out of a gang of burly blokes, and in more subtle ways where people don't look their age. Just as long as there is a small thread of reality, just enough for us to buy the illusion.
