How has he got away with it?

Sometimes you come across an actor who is so bad, you sit and wonder how on earth they have managed to get away with it so long. I know Keanu Reeves gets a lot of flack, but I honestly believe Sam Neil is one of the worst actors working today. He is incredibly wooden and has the range of a tea-spoon, something that is especially exposed when he somehow manages to get cast opposite actors with real talent (see A Cry in the Dark with Meryl or The Piano with Holly Hunter) where he gets blown off the screen. I understand he's Australian and those casting directors are familiar with him and give him jobs, thats fine, just not in some of our best films and certainly not with some of our best actors. He does him and everyone else no favours.

Sam Neill is a great actor.

reply

He's a new zealander.

reply

Yes, Born in Ireland, and moved to New Zealand, where his father was from, at age 7.

Actually his ancestry is English and Irish.

I think he's a great actor. I've seen him play everything from the anti-Christ to our beloved Dr. Alan Grant. That's range.

You thought he was bad in The Piano?

I thought he was great. The man was just so vile and disgusting, which I think means he accomplished his part very well. I'd say calling him a bad actor is rather erroneous. However, I can see that you have good taste in films, so I know at least that you're not an "internet troll" and that your post is genuine.

He is an excellent actor. Always dependable. He has terrific longevity. He is only wooden because you have seen him in roles where he is called upon to be wooden.

What???

Keep in mind that I've always found Sam Neill a little off-putting, but I wouldn't say he's a bad actor.
