Why was she not in season 2 of Star Trek?
Contract dispute?
shareAccording to wikipedia: Maurice Hurley, head writer and showrunner, did not like working with McFadden and, at Hurley's demand, she was let go at the end of season one. Diana Muldaur joined the production as the Enterprise's new chief medical officer, Dr. Katherine Pulaski, for the second season.
Series creator Gene Roddenberry admitted that the Dr. Pulaski character did not develop a chemistry with the other characters, so McFadden was approached to return as Dr. Crusher for the third season.
Which I didn't know - I just assumed she took a break for family reasons.
I find it weird that Wes was still on the Enterprise, but his mother somehow disappeared from the ship. I knew about Pulaski being the replacement, but I had no idea it was because of a behind the scenes feud.
shareRoddenberry also had a professional admiration for Diana Muldaur which helped grease the skids for McFadden's departure following Season 1. Repeat appearances on the original show were very seldom but Muldaur appeared twice. I had heard that Muldaur was somewhat old school on the set which gave the impression of her being remote with the other actors. Also, my impression was that Muldaur did not want to be tied down to a series.

I'm not sure if it was the writing, direction, or Muldaur herself, but her character just didn't seem to meld with everyone else. I think they could have done a better job with the character.
I would say it was Muldaur herself. Like I said above she was old school and part of that was getting a scene done in a couple of takes. Supposedly, Spiner and a couple of others loved to freewheel while shooting which bothered Muldaur.
sharePulaski was the worst.
shareShe got the role of Jack Ryan's wife in Hunt for Red October. It was supposed to develop into a huge franchise for the actors. Unfortunately, they decided to play musical Ryans and it didn't work out for anybody involved (except the producers). Pulaski didn't work out so she returned.
shareThey should have wrote off Wesley too. He was a terrible character.
shareThey should have given him pimples to make him more relatable to other teens. I would not say that he was terrible but used poorly. In Hollow Pursuits when Wesley made the slam about Barkley somebody like Geordy should have come down on him hard and told him to keep his observations to himself.

Yeah, I'm also not one of those who hated Wesley Crusher. A pimples plot would have been fun, but I imagine that much like the common cold, acne would be easily fixable in the 24th century.
Geordi even joined in on the name-calling with "Broccoli".
shareThat might have made a proper movie star out of her. Bummer.
shareI liked Diana Muldaur as Katherine Pulaski. She could be a touch ornery like Dr. McCoy (especially towards Data). But I like Gates McFadden as Dr. Crusher better, so I wasn't really sorry to see Pulaski go.
shareFans of the show tend to hate Pulaski in the second season, but I appreciated her as an entertaining female version of McCoy. Beverly Crusher was a completely different kind of doctor, but she won me over, particularly when she mentored Data on how to dance in "Data's Day," amusingly playing down his exceptional abilities.
shareI don't get the hate for Pulaski at all. She wasn't as good as Gates, but I think she should have stayed on as another doctor. Both different personalities and it would give two different perspectives. And why was there only one main doctor for a ship of over 1000?

Obamacare.
Dr. Pulaski came across as rude in some scenes. I just watched a scene in which she's curt with Picard. I like Muldaur also, but they should've fleshed out her character and have her interact more with the other characters. It sounds like Muldaur was frustrated with the writing.
I was glad when Dr. Crusher returned.
I would agree that she on occasion she came across as rude in a way that Dr. McCoy never did.
