Good actor or no?
He's never blown me away but he's never been bad either.
shareHe's mediocre.
shareyes. I think he's one of those actors who get older - does something different - and all of a sudden everyone says 'gosh! this guy can actually act'.
shareHe's better older. He acted differently in The Gentlemen. His 90s roles were the same.
shareYes, charming, bumbling, likeable, romantic posh guy worked very well for him. Later he had the opportunity and skill to do other things (though I must admit I've yet to catch up with some recent performances).
shareAbout a Boy is one my favorite movies, so I say yes. He was also very good in a A Very British Scandal
shareHe's a very good actor when he wants to be, but one with a fairly narrow range. He could play cute romantic heroes well when he was the age for that, but does rather better when he gets a chance to play more dubious or ambiguous characters, in films like "About A Boy" or "Florence Foster Jenkins".
Limited range, though, I've never even seem him try to play anything but a well-bred Brit, and that was when he played Frederich Chopin in the hilarious "Impromptu", and then he was playing a well-bred Pole. He was his regular romantic-hero self, with a little bit of an accent.
Edit: I wish he'd played Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter movies.
I agree. He's capable but he's never been brilliant.
shareHe's surprised me on a few occasions, done more than I thought he could do, but yeah. He's never had that single great role, the one that would blow the critics away and put him in contention for major awards and screen immortality.
But then, I don't think he takes his career as seriously as some do. He does what he does and earns a damn good living at it, rumor has it that he enjoys life when he's not working, and has never been as artistically ambitious as some, or tried to claw his way to the top of the A-list.
He's actually quite likable in interviews. Not sure why that doesn't translate to comedic performances.
shareI've heard he can be very funny or bitchy-funny in person, and well, nobody with a real sense of humor can be as ambitious as the real killer sharks!
And I think he's very good at comedy, although of course that doesn't mean that all the comedy films he's made are good.
He coasted on his persona for a long time, but in recent years has stretched himself and shown a good bit of range. My favourite Grant role is still About a Boy but he was good in Paddington 2 and the best thing about The Gentlemen. He’s certainly a more interesting actor when he is playing less wholesome characters.
shareI agree. He's definitely better now.
