This very question and lots of others like it seems to be very popular on this board.
For John's lack of awards in the 90's i blame Roseanne and bad luck. Also i have the unbelievable sense that John's career is magically connected to The St. Louis Cardinals. Afterall he was in two movies that were nominated for best picture in 2011, the last World Series title that the Cardinals claimed. In 2006, the second to last title they claimed, John won an Emmy (Finally) for Best Performance by A Guest Actor for his two episode appearance on Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip. But i guess my theory is wrong since Argo won Best Picture at the Oscars in February and the Redbirds didn't even make it to the Series.
