He did have a wild appearance on Letterman.

He was wearing some kind of thick-heeled shoes, and he brought one of his feet up high and nearly hit Letterman with it. Letterman backed away, very irritated, and said something like "OK, that's it!," if I remember correctly. The appearance was weird and later got a fair amount of publicity. I hope my recollection is helpful to you.

He is a nutjob who's off-screen demeanor, which he tried to label as some form of "performance art" or a joke, resulted in fewer and fewer people wanting to work with him. Search YouTube and the like to find the footage of him on "Late Night with David Letterman" in 1987. He was trying to do some Andy Kaufman-like anti-humor, but it backfired on him.

Worse still, when he held out for more money for the two Back to the Future sequels he was replaced. After Zemeckis and company used doubles and previously shot footage to get around his departure but neglected to pay him, Crispin sued and eventually won a very large settlement. This did not endear him to the Hollywood establishment, as you can imagine.

Yep, that was good ol' Crispin, all right.

He was so "crazy" that Letterman all of a sudden had to go "check on the Top 10".

He was doing a character from a movie -- "Rubin and Ed" -- he was in that hadn't come out yet. But he didn't tell anyone he was in character, so he looked crazy!

There's other videos KIND OF explaining it in his subsequent two apperances on Letterman through the next few years which can be found on Youtube, as well. I stress KIND OF, because the interviews are still quite crazy. You'll have to see for yourself.

Believe it or not, Wikipedia seems to have a fairly accurate description of the Letterman incident as well on the page about Glover. Although, I seriously doubt that he was on acid, given the fact that he was playing a character.

All in all, it was a very hilarious, Andy Kaufman like insane couple of interviews.
