rather American. i heard her interview after the Tonys this year and was quite shocked by it! I had no idea she was American. Nor did any of my friends. We have only ever seen her in P&P and are now even more impressed with her in that.

Sometimes she sounds both to me.

Perhaps she's something of a chameleon as far as her accent is concerned. At the 1996 BAFTAs (on youtube) her accent is a very proper English one; on the Rosie O'Donnell show from 1997 more American and then by the 2007 Tony's it's really quite full blown. Perhaps she just likes to feel that she's "one of our own" on both sides of the Atlantic.

My head exploded when I heard her speaking with an American accent! I happened across some youtube video of her receiving an award or something, and before then I'd only seen her in Pride & Prej, so to hear dear Lizzie speaking like that! Well, I fell off my seat and choked on my hot chocolate!

Like an earlier person said, she grew up going back and forth between the states and GB. I can see how it'd be easy to fade from one accent to the other. When I get around my southern relatives, my voice goes right there. But the accent doesn't come out so much when I'm working.

Children tend ot imitate their parents. She probably is more English around her mum and more American around her dad.

Now, she lives is New York so who know where that accent will end up!
