The Great Santini
Another vote for OR. Colors is good. The only problem with TGS is it is such a sad story and it took me a long time to not feel like Michael O'Keefe was that character. He had to play a somewhat weak person from what I recall, or at least a young man beset upon.
shareNot weak at all. Just the victim of his father's abuse but still was able stand his ground and was anti-discrimination. I really hated the Lt. Colonel thanks to a great performance by Duvall.
shareI felt the same way with Tim Hutton for a long time, after Ordinary People. While I haven't seen Santini in a long time, the fact that he is under his father's thumb made me feel bad for him and that he was somewhat of a victim. Not the actor's fault, and maybe I'm seeing it differently than you.
shareI think we agree more you think. He definitely was a victim but a defiant one. I just wouldn't characterize O'Keefe as weak in that father/son dynamic.
shareI remember a scene at a basketball game where he defies his father, but he seems to pay a lot of prices along the way. I don't recall how the movie ends.

Thanks for responding. Part of the reason I did this is people on General Discussion will post about specific actors or movies, which bugs me a little. I think they do it because there is a certain family (if you will) aspect, like certain people are more likely to follow GD than Trending. I like seeing the mug of the performer that we are talking about, and I assume more people will notice.
shareIt bugs me as well. If somebody wants to talk about the worst Nicolas Cage movies or their favorite Seinfeld episodes, it should be on the proper boards.
shareThey are good people but sometimes make weird decisions. In a related note, if anyone looks on the Psycho site there are all kinds of OT (Off Topic) threads. I started to enjoy the mini series Fosse / Verdon, and stumbled on a very detailed thread -- on Psycho, not the F/G site. Doesn't make sense, except I guess they want to keep it among those in the know.
