Question: Why did Chevy Chase only last one year on SNL?
He left voluntarily.
Chase was exceptionally popular at the time, and he and his management team at the time made the shrewd decision for him to quit the show, and star in a series of films. Since the majority of those films were moneymakers, this was a prescient move that allowed Chase to become even more popular and wealthier.
Then came Memoirs of the Invisible Man and Nothing But Trouble.
Both bombed at the box office and Chase’s star began to rapidly diminish. While he tried his hand at television again and was in several successful films, the failure of those two films and of his eponymous late night talk show, removed him from leading roles in Hollywood. Coupled with an apparent addiction problem and his much-publicized meltdown on the set of the NBC series, Community, Chase is now more of a joke than he is a serious performer in Hollywood. Today his career is grinding to a halt nearly 50 years after it began.
While a number of people speculate about “What if Chevy Chase had remained on Saturday Night Live” the reality is that his most successful career move was leaving the series. Had he made better career decisions by the early 1990s and had he avoided his substance abuse issues, it’s likely that he would be an elder statesman of American film comedy. As it is, he barely above the “Whatever happened to X” level of fame.
Looks like his legacy work will be Christmas Vacation (1989)...who would have thought.

Is it really a big deal though that an actor was big in the 80s and didn't do much beyond that?

sharePerhaps, but Chevy Chase's career isn't all that different than Aykroyd's. It seems to me that the guys got older and pretty much achieved everything they wanted. Bill Murray seemed to be the outlier probably due to his interest in more dramatic roles.
shareTrue most comedians do have a shelf life.
Boomers are still in control of most media ( although now reaching retirement age) and SNL starting cast is the holy temple of comedians for that age bracket.
I think what draws so many to Chase is his reputation for being an a-hole. Perhaps its been exacerbated by the internet, but it sure seems like he's not that nice of a guy. So if his career isn't going so well, it could be a relief to those who believe in karma.
