It makes sense to me. He's done Batman, in arguably the greatest ever superhero movie series, containing arguably the greatest ever superhero movie, centred on one character. He and it are massively acclaimed. The best he could hope for in doing another Batman is the same. He couldn't exceed it. This, on the other hand, is something different.
