You can't be serious. Lol.... Many actors are happy to be associated with one character it's means a steady paycheck. Downey and Depp know this. They are not stupid. They have realized that this is a job to them. Both are successful in bringing home the bacon. Bale will realize this soon and just be happy he is working. Actors who feel it's the "art" and not the money and work are fooling themselves. The ego needs to be checked at the door and the best actors realize this. It's ok to not do crap and just because it's superheroes and pirates doesn't mean it's crap. Depp has embraced the Jack Sparrow character and loves to visit children at hospitals in that persona.

I'd say the ideal is a balance between the two. Bale just needs a hit movie every now and then and he will have reached that balance.
You are right...to be regarded as a great actor franchise is the last thing you want...as for bale,I can clearly remember when American Hustle and wolf of Wall Street came out...all the praise for wolf is being sucked in by DiCaprio where as the praise for hustle is being spread out among cast there by not really hitting it home as a Christian Bale movie...same with big short...he need a hit where people need to single him out and movie needs to make 250 million + ...I don’t think he has the pull of DiCaprio where in his name alone brings in 400 million +...but he needs something like American sniper a surprise hit...but it’s hard to imagine him making a semi commercial prestige movie unless Nolan or Tarantino wanted him.I mean I pointed out in a earlier comment of mine a while ago may be with you...he is crazy enough to make a movie with a director who already gave him a bomb aka Scott Cooper..actors of his level won’t even touch the director with a 10 foot pole if their first collaboration is a critical and commercial flop , he seem to be shying away from using his star power full front...I think his best bet is to reduce ensemble to 2....he should be part of 2 main leads...so at least he gets half praise...with 4 or 5 leads in hustle and big short...no one will single him out.

I've seen several that pop back up 2 or 3 years after the were originally made and which have no relevance at all because of the date. Other sites lock down thread after 3 months without any comments, something like that would be welcome here.
