Should He Have Played the Joker in the DCEU?

Before you guys assume I'm another troll looking to upset you with seemingly absurd statements, I have reasoning for this idea. After watching Bale's performance in American Psycho, he convinced me that he was capable of playing a significantly disturbed character, one far removed from other roles of his, such as Bruce Wayne, Irving Rosenfield and Dicky Elkund. His character in American Psycho reminded me of how I view the Joker; a disturbed, sociopathic, cunning trickster. I also feel that he had the appropriate look and even if people claim he is too muscular, he's proven in the past to be quite capable of changing his physique dramatically, depending on the role.

Admittedly, the novelty of him portraying both Bruce Wayne and the Joker was what initially fascinated me, but I realized there were legitimate reasons why I supported this idea as well. What do you guys think?

You mean doing both? Bruce Wayne first, and Joker now? It's an interesting idea theoretically, but I wouldn't wish it myself. Obviously he could have done it acting-wise. Besides, American Psycho was what first attracted Nolan to want to work with Bale, and he could have offered him the Joker-role instead of Bruce Wayne, had he so wished. I'm sure that would have been interesting as well. Personally I'm happy as it is - I was happy with him as Wayne/Batman (I basically loved pretty much all the casting in the TDK trilogy, apart from the two Rachels), and wouldn't want him in this new DC thingy. And I wouldn't want his 2 most famous roles to be homicidal maniacs. Obviously his Bruce Wayne was a very damaged individual, but an entirely different kind of strange and disturbed than Patrick Bateman was. Bruce very much had his humanity left, Patrick presumably never had any to begin with.

I think Bale would've made a great Joker. In fact Bale's facial structure is more like The Joker than Bruce Wayne. He would've definitely been as great as Heath Ledger's Joker. I can see Bale pulling off the slicked back hair Joker though

reply

No. It would be way too distracting. I'm sure he would be an excellent Joker, it's a shame that he so recently played Batman/Bruce Wayne and is now too associated with the characters, which won't allow him to be part of any movies revolving around Batman anytime soon.

reply

Yeah, this isn't voice work, its physical performance and given the popularity and success of the TDK trilogy it'd be too distracting to see a former Bruce Wayne/Batman as his nemesis even if it were a different universe.
