She wasn't the star, but TOTAL RECALL, right before BASIC INSTINCT, was a hit as well...and I think some of her following films, such as CASINO, must have made money.
She did look like she might really take off there, for a minute.
What's ironic about her success in BASIC INSTINCT is that the part was offered to practically every actress in Hollywood before her. The first choice was Greta Schacci, then Michelle Pfeiffer...then they just got desperate.
She looks DIVINE in her screen test, though. No wonder they hired her. It's funny tho if you watch it, that there's a moment early on when the director (who's reading the other lines offscreen, doesn't come in with the cue....and her eyes eventually drift around, like "Help??"
