Will Audiences Pay to See Will Smith Again?

That's the question that confronts any producer or casting director.

Its the one which ultimately drives Hollywood.

Its called Show-Business, without any business, there's no show.

And the question is: will people part with their hard earned money to see his ugly mug on the screen again?

A movie is an exercise in make believe....if the actor's personal life is too well known, the audience can't get into that picture.

For example, you don't out yourself as gay in Hollywood because if you're going to play the straight leading man, the audience is going to be thinking to themsevles when they see you making out with a woman: "Yeah right, you take it up the ass".

So perception seeps into the screen.

And I just don't think producers are going to take the risk in casting Smith again.

Certainly not in a leading role.

Thoughts?

Based on the poor results of his last few blockbuster movies I would say they weren't paying to see him anymore even before the slap.

King Richard was good.

Its a shame that his performance in this, and indeed the entire film and subject matter, has been over-shadowed by his bad behavior.

But I think you're right: he was the 'Fresh Prince' in the early 90s, now he's the grumpy old violent man, and ppl just don't want to be anywhere near that.

REMAKE PLANES,TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES WITH SMITH AND ROCK IN THE LEADS...I WOULD PAY FOR THAT.

reply

HELL no!

reply

oh hell to the no!

You don't touch John Candy performances with other actors!

reply

NO...YOU DON'T...BUT IT IS PERFECTLY FINE TO TRY A DIFFERENT SPIN ON THE STORY.

reply

Yes. The 2010 movie, Due Date. Obviously the title is different, but that film has a lot funny moments. 📝

reply

Maybe a biopic on Martin Luther King whom he shares an uncanny resemblance to.

reply

A loose canon playing Martin Luther King? Not very credible. I wouldn't buy it. Pretty sure I would not be the only one.

reply

It would probably do better than King Richard which I have zero interest in seeing.

reply

looks nothing like him;

I guess THEY all look the same to you!

reply

Will Smith does look like MLK. Chris Rock does not look like MLK.

I actually had to think pretty hard about the last Will Smith movies that I have paid to see - It felt like it’s been a while. I had to look up his filmography to remember that they were Suicide Squad (2016) and Focus (2015). Before that, I had to go all the way back to I Am Legend (2007) and The Pursuit of Happiness (2006).

I was actually a little surprised that almost a decade had passed since I cared to see him in another movie. I can’t speak for anyone else, but he already mostly does movies that I’m not terribly interested in seeing…which is very different than what I felt about him in the 90s.

Me too. The 90s had MIB and Enemy of the State and Will's star seemed to be on the rise then. The only movie I've cared to see of his since then was Concussion in 2015.
