20 Years After Clueless - What the Hell Happened to Alicia Silverstone?

In 1995, Silverstone was huge. Clueless was a sleeper hit and Hollywood assumed that its star was on to bigger and better things. She had been building buzz with her appearances in Aerosmith videos and the MTV-friendly thriller, The Crush. So naturally when she was cast in the sure-thing Batman sequel it seemed like Silverstone's star was on the rise.

Instead, her movie career crashed and burned as quickly as it started. But her story doesn't end with Excess Baggage. Silverstone has been quite successful in redirecting her career. You may not see her much on the big screen or even on TV. But she's still working on stage and has turned her vegetarianism into a cottage industry.

Mostly simply lack of talent.

She was a stunner, but not such a great actress after all.

She was more Brigitte Bardot than Marilyn Monroe, so to speak.

Batman and Robin sunk that ship.

Yeah, the other up-and-coming actor didn't come out of that film well either. (Yes, I know, no-one did, but still.)

Paul Rudd,Britney Murphy, and Donald Faison are probably the most successful out of that film. Stacey Dash ended her career with all that right wing talk.

And Brittany Murphy ended her career by dying! 😒

Your blog is like a rabbit hole (in a good way). I'll be reading one post and click on a million other links and lose track of time. I love it.

I even have one of Choupette's in vitro kittens.

She was the "it" girl for about two or three years after Clueless became such a success. Alicia was so edgy, especially compounded with the Aerosmith videos. But she didn't handle her image the right way, and yes, there's right and wrong ways to handle an image in Hollywood. And this is also a cautionary tale. There still are powers that be in the film industry that a toung, popular and pretty actor must respect. Alicia didn't and look what happened. Her career fell flat due to malicious, slanderous.gossip that prayed her as a spoiled brat. She might or might not have been a spoiled brat, but that's beside the point because all young actors are precocious, cute, irritating little "monsters" - because that is how they are trained in their little acting classes. To be outgoing, cute, engaging, spontaneous and demonstrative and inevitably demanding meant getting those important parts. Alicia was
propbably no different, just less bratty, which is the ironic part. She was as sweet as apple pie, but people around her were beyond jealous and bent on proving her
backers wrong. This goes to show that you cannot judge actors based upon what you read and see on gossip forums or in tabloids or magazines. Alicia might not be the smartest girl in the world but she's no dummy, but came off as an airhead in interviews, (which might have been a tactic to endear her to a cretain demographic). But that didnt work. She took bad advice with contracts and production, wanting to exert control of her own
image at a time when she needed to rely on seasoned, loyal professionals. Sometimes one must step in line until credibility and intelligence are established. As it was, no one wanted to bank on her projects, as she was seen as too headstrong and stubborn to take huge monetary risks with.

Saying her career "crashed and burned" is overstating it. Sure Cluless was her peak, but she's had steady employment since. There haven't been many high-profile roles, but it's still work.
