Why was John Hughes furious at her?

I know that she turned down the Lea Thompson role in Some Kind of Wonderful, but why would Hughes be 'furious' with her? I thought it was nice to see another actress besides Molly Ringwald in a John Hughes movie. I do like her as an actress, don't get me wrong, but I'm just curious as to why John Hughes was so mad?

Hughes wasn't angry at her because she turned down the role in Some Kind of Wonderful. He wanted to make a lot of movies with Molly as the lead. But Ringwald turned all of them done to do non-Hughes projects. This is what Molly has said recently: ''John was one of the most sensitive people I've ever known. It comes across in his movies. But when you're that sensitive, you are wounded very easily,'' Ringwald says. ''He was wounded, really by us growing up in a way. If he had it his way, he would have kept making movie after movie with me and [Anthony Michael Hall], and nothing would ever have changed. But it's very suffocating, as wonderful as it is. I would have loved to have gone and done movies with other people and then come back and done some more movies with him and gone on like that. But that wasn't okay with John. He just wanted intense loyalty.''

So I guess her arrogance destroyed her career. When you reach a certain level of success and eminence, most actors think they're too good for certain things and can reject any prospective big role by a major studio regardless of the substance and depth of the project and anticipation. The problem is, when she turned down roles like Pretty Woman, she destroyed her career. She should have accepted those roles instead of playing around. She could have gotten engaged and gone to France after doing Pretty Woman but she was just too damn arrogant. She didn't really have the talent or merit to reject those roles so I guess we shaped her into an arrogant, spoiled brat. She's learned her lesson now but she had such potential. She's more talented than Julia Roberts, though both have limited talent to be honest.

Ohh okay, That makes sense now. Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply :)

What you must understand is that Molly had already become typecast as the Teen Queen, mostly due to all her previous John Hughes roles.
This is fine if you want your career to be playing the same character over and over... But actors are artists and they need/must/want to do more than just the same old role.

Few actors can make careers out of playing the same thing - Sean Connery, Jackie Chan and a few others do alright because they pretty much play themselves. Steven Segal started out OK as a martial-arty ex-special forces/CIA agent in every film, but now no-one wants to know and his recent films are pretty much straight to DVD bargain bucket affairs.

As Molly said, she felt suffocated and wanted to do other things but also wanted to return - She never thought she was too good for it. She had to do what she wanted, not what people *thought* was the only role she could play. I'm sure she had perfectly good reasons for not wanting to take the roles offered and not everyone wants to be an über-famous actor. She's still a household name, but she's also a mother and likely has quite a happy balance.

I seem to recall hearing that a Newsweek or Time interview she did after Sixteen Candles(?) offended Hughes. Not because she overtly insulted him or anything. Rather she commented that she had done her last film with Hughes for a while & was looking at other projects. If Hughes was as sensitive as she claims, then yeah I can see him opting to, indeed, make their last film together the last she would ever do with him.

I don't think she was "arrogant" because she wanted to do different roles. Any actor wants to "stretch" by doing different parts. At least she didn't end up like so many other child stars like Lindsay Lohan, Corey Haim or Brad Renfro.

Really? Please tell me a good movie of Ringwald to watch. (Breakfast Club no, I watched yesterday)

What do you mean "Breakfast Club no"? You not liking it or rating her performance highly in it doesn't negate the fact most people do.

Ring wall is very talented. Personally I can't stand Roberts.
