Brandon in GF 1 Pacino in Godfather 2
Brando in the 50s Pacino in the 70s.

Overall Al Pacino is better as an actor and as the godfather in my opinion. However Brando was wiser as the godfather and he's definitely one of the best actors of all time.

Pacino all day for me. His run in the 70's is probably the best I've seen. Brando is also amazing too, and On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire are perfection.

The Godfather
Serpico
The Godfather: Part II
Dog Day Afternoon
...And Justice for All.

I mean all of these are Oscar worthy, by the same actor, in the same decade. And his work in the 90's is also quite good.

Subtlety is not is not his strong suit. I believe that Brando is not over the top like cappacino.

reply

Then again Brando cannot act

So Pacino wins automatically

Many actors had a fantastic run in the 70s.

Nicholson- Five Easy Pieces,The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Passenger

DeNiro- Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter

Hackman's, Voight's and Hoffman's catalogs were terrific as well. It isn't really fair to just say one actor was above the rest.

"Many actors had a fantastic run in the 70s."

The difference at least with Pacino's first 6 from '71-75 is they show a wider emotional range than any of his peers in that run and crucially, they were in a row with nothing in between - not that something like that makes it better in and of itself but it stands out in that regard.

"DeNiro- Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter"

Bang The Drum Slowly is not worthy of being listed with those others imo, I mean, he's good in that but I don't consider that special work like the other 4.
